Schools for the Environmental Scientist and Hydrologist

There are several schools across the country that offer degree programs in environmental science (entailing coursework in biology, chemistry and geology) and hydrology (entailing the study of the structure and physical aspects of underground or surface water). Occupations are available with degrees at the bachelor's or master's level, but a doctorate degree is needed to conduct independent research in either of these fields.
  1. State University of New York (SUNY)

    • The College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) at SUNY provides 10 departments with degree options in architecture, chemistry, engineering and environmental sciences. Programs in hydrology include Aquatic and Fisheries Science (B.S), Fish and Wildlife Biology and Management (M.S., M.P.S., Ph.D.), Water Resources Engineering (M.S. and Ph.D.) and the Graduate Program in Environmental Science (GPES) (M.S., M.P.S. and Ph.D.) with a concentration in Water and Wetland Resource Studies. ESF is highly regarded as both an educational institution and environmental advocate. It was ranked as the second best environmental college in the country in 2009 by Treehugger.com and was given exemplary marks for environmental action in 2008 by the National Wildlife Foundation.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) was tied with Harvard University as the second best graduate school in the country in 2008 by "U.S News & World Report." The school provides many degree options for those interested in environmental science and hydrology. The bachelor's degree in Environmental Science (BSES) offers six concentration options, one of which is in hydrology and water resources. The Master of Science in Environmental Science (MSES) offers four concentration options, such as water resources, as well as the ability to combine concentrations. The doctorate in Environmental Science (Ph.D.ES) provides dissertation research in subdisciplines of environmental science, such as groundwater flow modeling.

    Northland College

    • Northland College is located in Wisconsin among the almost 100 acres of Chequamegon National Forest. The college places a large emphasis on the environment through its curricula and community involvement to raise awareness of environmental issues. It was ranked by Treehugger.com as the best environmental college in the nation. Four of the six academic departments within the school consist of majors related to the environment. Majors that are specific to hydrology are Environmental Geosciences with a water science emphasis and Natural Resources with a fisheries ecology and management emphasis.
