Universities create flexible learning environments through independent studies programs. These programs attract high school students interested in accelerating their transitions to college.     • The BYU Independent Study Program allows students and adults to register for more than 300 online courses. This independent studies program covers topics including anthropology, nursing and statistics. Brigham Young University also hosts free courses on genealogy and recreation designed for the general public. The Tutoring Program connects independent studies participants with tutors familiar with major academic fields. Students in this program can work toward adult diplomas, certificates of music and degrees in general studies. The BYU Independent Study Program accepts applications each semester for scholarships and grants to defray tuition costs.

    Miami Dade College

    • The Independent Studies Program at Miami Dade College hosts courses in natural sciences, literature and music. Teachers certified by the State of Florida can renew their certifications through this independent studies department. Miami Dade College features a Download Center on its website filled with syllabi, class assignments and exams for the program. Participants in the Independent Studies Program use the Kendall Campus Library and the Kendall Computer Courtyard to finish their homework. The Koffee House at Miami Dade College offers a place for students to meet, relax and read.

    Portland State University

    • Portland State University houses dual-credit and college courses through its Office of Independent Study. High school students can complete courses in nutrition, economics and history to earn credit for high school graduation and college requirements. College students finish general studies requirements in English, mathematics and statistics through the Office of Independent Study. The Deadline Calculator available on the office's website helps students plan assignment and final exam dates to meet semester deadlines. This program does not set a limit on the number of classes taken per year and allows the public to register without admission to the university.

    University of Mississippi

    • The University of Mississippi's Department of Independent Study runs courses through its Angel online management system. Students register for classes ranging from chemistry surveys to intermediate Spanish in this independent study program. Teachers can achieve or renew certification with the State of Mississippi in independent study courses. The Department of Independent Study provides flexible timetables with a one-year deadline for completion of all classes.
