The Best Schools for Masters in Public Health

Employment in public health is predicted to grow at a faster-than-average rate, increasing by 16 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A master's degree in public health, or MPH, can help advance a career in this growing field. U.S. News and World Report offers a ranked list of MPH programs based on criteria such as surveys of experts in the field and statistics on the school’s faculty, students and research facilities.
  1. Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

    • Ranked first on the U.S. News and World Report’s list, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health offers a Master of Public Health degree. Students can choose to attend a full-time, 11-month program or a part-time program. Degrees require 80 credits for completion. Johns Hopkins operates campuses in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Barcelona, as well as online. Course work focuses on the “epidemiology, biostatistics, management sciences and the environmental, biological, behavioral and social factors that influence the health of populations and communities,” according to the school’s website.

    Harvard School of Public Health

    • The Harvard School of Public Health ranked second on U.S. News and World Report’s list. The Harvard MPH program requires completion of 42.5 course credits. Students can choose from a two-semester, full-time program, a two- to three-year part-time program or a summer-session only program. Core curriculum focuses on topics such as biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health sciences and health services administration. Students can choose from seven concentration areas, including family and community health, global health, occupational and environmental health, and clinical effectiveness.

    University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

    • The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School of Public Health tied for second on the ranking list. The MPH degree is available in three concentration areas: leadership, health care and prevention, and occupational health nursing. The master’s degree requires 42 credits for completion. Students can attend part-time or full-time. Most classes are offered both on the Chapel Hill campus and online. Focus areas include field epidemiology, health assessment, public health practice, industrial hygiene, environmental science and policy development.

    • The University of Washington’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine ranked third on the list. The school offers 16 MPH degrees in various concentrations, including biostatistics, public health genetics, nutritional sciences, maternal and child health, global health and epidemiology.
