Law Degree Conversion Courses

Law degree conversion courses in the United Kingdom are offered at the post graduate level as a Graduate diploma in Law (GDL) or Common Professional Examination (CPE). These programs are designed for individuals that have obtained an undergraduate degree in an unrelated field and now wish to pursue a career in law.
  1. Birmingham City University

    • The Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) at Birmingham City University provides comprehensive academic training for individuals to enter the field of law without having acquired an undergraduate degree in the field. The program is one year in length when completed on a full time basis, with 12 hours spent in class each week and approximately 40 additional hours spent in independent reading, research and course work. The program is based upon fundamental topics mandated by the Law Society and the General Council of the Bar. These legal topics include law of contract, law of tort, criminal law and constitutional and administrative law. Classes are conducted in small groups to provide a student-oriented learning environment and replicate courtrooms are located on the campus for real life simulations (see Reference 1).

    College of Law

    • The College of Law offers a Graduate in Law Diploma program that may be completed in one year on a full time basis or between 18 and 24 months when completed in part-time studies. The program begins with an on line introductory preparatory course where students are introduced to legal methodology. The course curriculum consists of the seven fundamental subjects set forth by the Law Society and the General Council of the Bar, through which students complete regular assessments, assignments and an examination for each subject. The school's preparing-for- practice module offers practical experience for a career in the field of law with volunteer work and independent research projects (see Reference 2).

    Kingston University London

    • The Law Post Graduate Diploma at Kingston University London is a two-year program that has replaced the school's Graduate Diploma in Law. The program prepares students that have had no previous academic training in law for a career as a barrister or solicitor. Students may choose to either a full or part-time study program, but each program begins with a five-day course that provides an overview of the fundamentals of law and legal reasoning. Following this intensive course, students begin courses in law of the European Union, public law, equity and trusts, land law and more. Students complete regular written and oral assignments and a final examination at the end of the program. Throughout the program, students also organize and develop a research project relevant to their particular area of interest in law (see Reference 3).
