Difference Between a Podium & a Lectern

Often, the two words "podium" and "lectern" are used interchangeably. But, oddly enough, there is a difference between what constitutes a lectern and what constitutes a podium.
  1. Lectern

    • A lectern is a stand with a slanted top, used to support material from which a speaker reads. Lecterns are often used by college professors.

    Podium

    • A podium is a lectern placed on a raised platform. This is usually the case with an orchestra conductor's podium.

    Pulpit

    • Ministers preach from a pulpit, but this piece of furniture is really the same thing as a podium because it is an elevated lectern.
