Family & Consumer Science Schools

Family and consumer science schools offer undergraduate and graduate study programs. Also known as human sciences and home economics, family and consumer science utilizes an integrated approach to understanding family and individual development and their interactions with society.
  1. Degree Programs

    • A bachelor's degree in family and consumer sciences is typically a four-year program, which involves courses in the chosen discipline as well as general courses required of all students. Graduate programs, such as a Master of Science, are one- to two-year programs involving upper-level courses. Graduate students are also required to complete a thesis, or in some cases, complete a project related to the program. Some universities offer doctoral programs in family relations, child and family therapy, exercise physiology, and nutrition and food science.

    Majors

    • Degree programs will typically focus on a major area of study; however, some schools offer a comprehensive family and consumer science degree. Common majors include early childhood development and education, consumer studies, food and nutrition, and retail and product development.

    Curriculum

    • Depending on the major area of focus in a degree program, the curriculum may include courses in natural and social sciences, retail, family economics, food and nutrition, clothing design and textiles. The degree program will also include general education requirements. Internships may also be required for some degree programs.
