Social Security Disability & College

People receive Social Security disability for a variety of physical and mental conditions. Some recipients hope to get a college education and return to the workforce one day.
  1. Qualifying for Disability

    • Attending college does not necessarily disqualify someone from receiving Social Security disability. You may need to demonstrate to the Social Security Administration that while you are able to attend school, you are still unable to work. Your doctor may need to explain why you can go to school but not to work.

    Paying for College

    • Social Security disability will not pay for a recipient to attend college but recipients must often meet income guidelines to receive federal financial assistance for school. Some schools have additional funds for students with disabilities. The financial aid office at the college you wish to attend can tell you about forms of assistance for which you might qualify.

    Vocational Rehabilitation

    • All states have bureaus of vocational rehabilitation, though the name of the agency varies slightly from state to state. These agencies offer support for people with disabilities that want to return to the workforce. They sometimes pay for education and training for clients and also provide supportive services for clients while attending school and preparing to return to work.
