Nationally the trend is toward more critical assessment of vocational nursing curriculum and education to further improve patient safety and patient outcomes. Additionally, the committees play an important role in creating partnerships between health care facilities and nursing programs to better serve the public and attract students into the profession.
Another key factor for creating a curriculum committee for vocational nursing is to make certain that the curriculum is aligned with national models and that its content is on par with national standards. Further, curriculum should promote a free movement between educational levels, making it easier for nurses to transition to baccalaureate, master's and doctoral degrees.
The vocational nursing curriculum committee also recommends revising or adding new courses and programs to meet emerging needs within the nursing profession. In some cases, the curriculum committee may be necessary to fulfill requirements set forth by the state legislature and the committee can advise a board of trustee or directors and a college's president in regard to vocational nursing education.
