About Student Codes of Ethics

Before the start of each academic year, many high school and college students are required to agree to a code of ethics. They may be presented with a document to sign. Parents may have to sign, too. Student codes of ethics are intended to provide agreed-upon values for the community.
  1. History

    • Codes of ethics date to pre-biblical times. Knights swore to uphold a code of chivalry. Medical, engineering and dental associations have long required members to agree to a code of ethics. Schools sometimes refer to codes of ethics as honor codes.

    Features

    • Though they vary from school to school, codes of ethics often focus on certain subjects. They ban plagiarism and cheating. They expect respectful behavior toward teachers and other students. They forbid racism, bullying and sexual harassment. They encourage students to strive for excellence. They prohibit use of illegal substances.

    Effects

    • Punishment for those who violate the code of ethics may include warnings, detention, loss of credit, and expulsion from the class or school. As part of the code, students may be required to report violations they witness.
