How to Calculate Asphalt Weight Per Yard

According to the National Asphalt Pavement Association, ordered quantities of asphalt are specified either by weight in tons or volume in cubic yards. The volume of an area needs to be calculated before the weight can be estimated. Given a certain estimated weight of asphalt, the weight of asphalt per cubic yard can be calculated, allowing you two different methods to use when placing your order.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert cubic yards to cubic feet. A cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet.

    • 2

Multiply 27 by 145, which is the weight of asphalt in pounds per cubic foot given by the NAPA. Twenty-seven multiplied by 145 equals 3,915, so asphalt weighs 3,915 pounds per cubic yard.

    • 3

Multiply that number by the amount of entire cubic yards to calculate the total weight. For example, if the volume encompasses 50 cubic yards, the total weight of the asphalt is 195,750 pounds.
