How to Calculate Cubic Yard Volume for a Circle

A circle is a two-dimensional shape that has area but not volume. A three-dimensional round object is a sphere, such as a kickball or marble. Cubic yards is one measurement used to quantify the volume. In order to figure the volume of a sphere, you need to know the radius, which is the distance from the center of the sphere to the outside. Since a sphere is perfectly round, each point on the sphere is equidistant from the center.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the radius by the radius by the radius, also known as cubing the radius. For example, if your radius equals 23 yards, multiply 23 by 23 by 23 to get 12,167 cubic yards.

    • 2

Multiply the radius cubed by 4/3. In this example, multiply 12,167 by 4/3 to get 16,222.67 cubic yards.

    • 3

Multiply the result by pi, approximately 3.14, to find the volume of the sphere in cubic yards. Finishing the example, multiply 16,222.67 by 3.14 to find the volume of the sphere equals 50,939.17 cubic yards.
