Railroad Training Schools for Conductors

Railroad conductors oversee the train routes, movements and car switching; they are also in charge of the relay of signals in case of an emergency. A conductor works irregular hours, holidays and weekends; shifts can last for up to 12 hours. They are trained to be alert to changing conditions and to act safely and responsibly in times of crisis.

    • The conductor course DCTC is a 7 week program that begins in January, March, May or August. The program objective is to properly teach students how to serve as railroad conductors. DCTC has formed partnerships with the Canadian Pacific Railway, Union Pacific Railroad and a variety of other regional lines. This has helped the school to develop a curriculum that gives graduates an advantage in the industry. To enroll in this program you must meet all the admission requirements; you must be18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, pass a criminal background check, have no felonies or DUIs, complete a medical exam, pass color blindness, vision and hearing tests, be a United States citizen, take fitness test, pass a drug test and have your physician's approval to perform on the job.

    Railway Trades Training Center

    • Railway Trades Training Center boasts of numerous certified railway experts who have several years of experience. Their expertise, combined with RTTC's course curriculum, gives students a variety of exercises and activities to demonstrate real life situations. The RTTC's courses are based on Transport Quebec's and Transport Canada's railway standards. The students are given the opportunity to practice in a repair shop and are taught all of the rail requirements. Courses run from January to February in Quebec City and March to April in Ottawa. The courses are taught in both French and English.

    British Columbia Institute of Technology

    • The British Columbia Institute of Technology offers a 17-week course railway conductor program. The program runs twice a year beginning in January and August. The students are taught with a combination of hands-on application through work site visits and lab facilities, classroom instruction and a week-long practicum. Students are continuously evaluated throughout the duration of the program; a minimum passing grade of 70% is required to complete the program successfully, with the exception of courses RWCD 1050 and 1051, for which the students must pass with a minimum of 80%.

    Modoc Railroad Academy

    • Modoc features a curriculum that has been inspected and approved by officials from Union Pacific, Amtrak, BNSF and other companies nationwide. The program teaches students trackside signaling systems, operating rules, safety, hazardous materials, braking systems and more. Students are given 4 weeks of classroom instruction and 5 of weeks hands-on training on the school's railroad. The railroad is one of the most unique features of the academy. The instructors set up various scenarios that students may face in real life situations and the students solve the problems in a safe and controlled environment.
