How to Study for a College Basic Human Anatomy Class

A basic college anatomy class is a prerequisite for most nursing and medical degrees. The class requires a lot of memorization since you'll be learning all of the major and minor systems of the body. A basic anatomy class is also useful for fitness instructors, yoga teachers and personal trainers to develop a greater knowledge of the muscle groups, bones, tendons and connective tissues. Start out on the right foot with strong study skills to excel at an anatomy course.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend as many lectures and labs as possible. If you miss a class, be sure to get the notes you missed from someone in your class.

    • 2

Rewrite your notes in your own words after class. This should be performed after every class. In anatomy, your teacher may teach each body system separately in a condensed manner. After each section or chapter, go through your notes and reassess the material. Be prepared to spend at least 10 hours per week studying the parts of the body.

    • 3

Create flashcards for every muscle, tendon, bone, organ, connective tissue, organ system and component of the circulatory system. Organize the flashcards into systems: circulatory, endocrine, skeletal, muscular, lymphatic, digestive, nervous, respiratory, excretory and reproductive.

    • 4

Use the CD-ROM that comes with the textbook as an extra study guide.

    • 5

Create a study group that meets at least once per week and possibly more before tests. In the study group you can compare anatomy notes or assign each person a body system to work on. Each person creates notes and diagrams and shares their work with the group. Use flashcards and mock tests to help each other study for upcoming exams.

    • 6

Buy an anatomy coloring book. An anatomy coloring books allows you to visually study the systems, muscles and organs of the body and engage with them by coloring. Use different colors for each system or follow the instructions included with the coloring book.
