Allow yourself time to complete each question. If you are writing a timed essay, you should pace yourself according to the amount of time you are given. If you need to answer several essay questions during one time allotment, divide the amount of time given evenly among each question.
Read through the essay question, and try to identify key words that may help guide you in writing your essay. Some of the words to look for include compare, contrast, define, evaluate, identify, summarize or explain. Make sure you understand exactly what the question is asking.
Plan your answer by writing down the main points you want to express on a piece of scrap paper. This will help you remember your most important points and stay on track as you write your essay.
Write an outline on scrap paper before attempting to write your essay. Read through your outline to make sure it flows logically and that your main points are covered in the order you want to cover them.
Begin your essay with an introduction that expresses the main point to be made in the body of your essay. Write your essay, using proper grammar and following the outline you have created.
End your essay with a summary. Your summary can simply paraphrase your introduction, and should flow nicely when read.
Reread your essay. Check your spelling, as well as any omitted words or points. Check for any misstated dates or facts, and correct any such error.
