How to Space College Essays

Correctly spacing your college essays will ensure that your paper will convey a level of seriousness and maturity to your reader. Double-spacing will also allow your essay look professional, with a scholarly layout. Whether you are writing your college essay or paper in MLA, Chicago, or APA format, the double-spacing option should always be implemented.

Set uniform margins. Justify your document, so that you have equal one inch margins on all sides -- unless your professor instructs you to do otherwise. To adjust your essay, click on the page layout tab, displayed on the top panel. Then click the margins icon and choose the "Normal" option to establish proper margins.

Click on the line spacing icon on the top panel of your document, in order to change the spacing in your text. You want to click on the 2.0 option, to double-space your college essay. This ensures easier reading and understanding.

Review the spacing between the words in your essay. A single space is needed after every word in your document. This also includes a space after punctuation marks such as commas, periods, colons and semi colons.
