Directions on MLA Writing Styles

The MLA style guide is intended to help writers of papers and essays cite their resources clearly and consistently. It seems complicated at first glance, but the formatting rules are common to most classrooms and writers can always look up the specifics of citing each resource in the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. Instructions

    • 1

Write your content using 12-point, Times New Roman font. This is the standard font size and type for MLA style.

    • 2

Set all page margins to 1 inch.

    • 3

      Set paragraph lines to double-spacing.

    • 4

Add consecutive page numbers in the upper right corner, a half-inch from top edge and 1 inch from the right edge. If you are formatting a paper, write your last name with one space before the page number on each page.

    • 5

Use only one space after periods.

    • 6

Start new paragraphs with first line indented a half-inch from the left margin.

    • 7

Place the title on the first page,10 lines down and centered. Write the title in Title Case. Leave a double-spaced line between your title and the first line of your paper.

    • 8

Type any headings using consecutive numbers with a period, a space and the heading title.

    • 9

Place double quotes around any in-text citations. Place the page number of the work these citations came from in parenthesis after the citation.

    • 10

Create a separate Works Cited page for the paper. It should provide references for any books, papers, websites and other content you cited or quoted within your paper. There are different formats for citing different works, but generally you list the author's name last name first, the title of the work in italics or quotes, place of publication, publisher, year published and format.

    Works Cited Page

    • 11

Make the Works Cited page a separate page from the paper. Use the standard MLA page formatting procedures from Section 1. Title your page "Works Cited."

    • 12

List cited works in alphabetical order by the author's last name.

    • 13

Use Title Case format for the titles of works.

    • 14

Italicize the titles of larger works, like books, and place the titles of shorter works, like poems, in quotations.

    • 15

Create a hanging indent of five spaces for the second line and any following lines of each citation.
