The Nation's Best Ranking Criminal Justice Schools

Students that graduate with a degree in criminal justice can go into a wide range of different fields, including law enforcement, private investigation, private security and corrections/probations. There are a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States with criminal justice programs, but only a select few are consistently ranked among the nation's best.
  1. State University of New York at Albany

    • The State University of New York at Albany offers a criminal justice program that gives students an interdisciplinary look at many different aspects of criminal justice. These aspects (and their respective disciplines) include, but are not limited to, the "social and personal forces that lead to criminal conduct," the "organization and operation of crime control systems" and the "interactions among the many agencies which comprise criminal justice systems." This program looks to help students understand crime, how society perceives crime and how the different criminal justice agencies can best seek to diminish crime's presence in society. The college offers both graduate and undergraduate programs depending on your level of education. This school is currently ranked number two by "U.S. News & World Report."

    University of Maryland

    • The University of Maryland's Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice offers undergraduate and graduate courses that cover many different facets of criminal justice and criminology, including "crime and delinquency, law enforcement, juvenile justice, criminology, courts and corrections." The undergraduate program includes required courses on criminal law, law enforcement and juvenile delinquency, while the graduate programs are more open to the desires of the student. The University of Maryland also offers its criminal justice students the opportunity to join the Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society, if they meet the society's requirements. This school is currently ranked number one by "U.S. News & World Report."

    University of California at Irvine

    • The University of California at Irvine provides a criminal justice program that seeks to combine the studies of criminology and law and society. The result is an interdisciplinary program that features faculty that once served as presidents of several distinguished societies and associations, including the American Society of Criminology, the Law and Society Association and the Society for the Study of Social Problems. The university offers both graduate and undergraduate programs and features courses from Crime and Cinema to the Civil Legal System and Sociology of Law. This school is currently ranked number five by "U.S. News & World Report" but is often considered to be one of the top four schools in the nation.

    University of Missouri at St. Louis

    • The University of Missouri at St. Louis Department of Criminology offers both undergraduate and graduate courses. Its self-proclaimed mission is "to conduct and disseminate the findings of basic and applied research on crime and justice." The program seeks to do so by offering students courses in the theories of Crime, criminal law and criminal justice policy, as well as more specified courses such as Violence Against Women and Race, Crime and Justice. This school is currently ranked number four in the nation by "U.S. News & World Report."
