How to Search for Colleges Near You

Selecting the right college is an important decision. One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a college is whether you want to find a school close to home or far away. If you want to search for colleges near you, there are several online directories that can assist you. If you live in a larger city, you may have many colleges to choose from. Each state also has dozens of colleges; some have more than one hundred. Find a college that offers your major of study, is within your budget and offers the extracurricular activities that interest you.

      Locate a college in your city, or in nearby areas using College Board's "College MatchMaker" database. With College MatchMaker, you can search for colleges by type-- public or private, two or four-year colleges, location, degree type, major, cost, admissions selectivity, sports and extracurricular activity and even housing. Click on the result to read a profile about the school.

      Look for colleges near you using Peterson's College Search index. Select your state and all colleges, including four-year, two-year community colleges and trade schools in that state, will be listed. Click on a result and read the profile about the school, which includes information such as setting-- rural, suburban or urban, the types of degrees offered, whether the school is public or private and how difficult it is to get in.

      Find a college near you using the University of Texas at Austin's college index. The index lists colleges by state in alphabetical order. Each entry has a link to the college's website. Only four-year universities and colleges are indexed. Trade schools and community colleges are absent from the directory.
