How to Write a 4-Page Essay on the Merits of Plagiarism

Writing an essay on the merits of plagiarism is likely to gain you a funny glance of two from your professor, but there are a few classes where such an essay might be appropriate. Creative writing classes tend to encourage non-traditional topics. An essay of this type would also be a good exercise in argumentation in an introduction to philosophy class. Ironically, many of the articles on the Internet dealing with this topic have been plagiarized and are nearly identical to other articles on the web. Writing a four-page essay on this topic does not, however, need to also be an exercise in plagiarism.

      Brainstorm about ideas as to what the advantages of plagiarism are. You will have to get creative to come up with come up with some reasons because most of the reasons given by other authors on the Internet are presented tongue-in-cheek. For instances, an article titled "The Advantages of Plagiarism" by Do Right Marketing cites energy savings and gaining the esteem of colleagues as a possible excuse for plagiarizing. You will need to come up with more reasonable claims.

      Construct your thesis sentence. The thesis sentence is the point you hope to prove in the next four pages of your essay. Given the topic, the thesis sentence should be something lauding the benefits of plagiarism.

      Create an outline for your paper that will serve as your writing guide as you compose your essay. The outline should consist of an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction will contain your thesis statement and set the stage for the remainder of your essay. Ideally, this will be no more than one paragraph, or about one-half page in your four-page essay. The body of the paper will furnish your reasons for arguing on behalf of plagiarism. In your outline, simply list these. You will provide further explanation in your essay.

      Write the introduction and the body of your paper. The introduction should elaborate on the thesis, but only briefly. The body of the paper should provide the rationale for the thesis statement. Having three to five reasons supporting the act of plagiarism should suffice for a four-page essay. Each reason should be approximately one paragraph and should be explained in as much detail as possible. The body of the paper will take approximately three of your four pages.

      Conclude your paper by reemphasizing your main thesis and the points made in the body of your paper. The conclusion should tie all of the main arguments of the body of the paper together and reiterate the thesis. The conclusion, like the introduction, should only take about one paragraph of the paper.
