Brigham Young is one of several traditional colleges to offer photography as a bachelors degree. The Provo, Utah campus requires a portfolio review for applicants to the program and a portion of the Undergraduate curriculum requires study of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The program teaches photography skills for portraits, advertising, fashion, stock, fine art, journalism and several other disciplines. Film and digital techniques are covered and students are required to participate in hands-on exercises throughout the program.
Virginia Commonwealth is located in the city of Richmond and offers a Bachelors of Fine Arts in photography and film. The program allows students to choose a focus on photography, film or a combination of both. Students have access to a photo and film processing lab and the courses use hands-on instruction to teach film and digital techniques. The program's goal is to prepare students for a career in studio, landscape and fine art photography.
The Art Institutes have campus locations scattered throughout the United States and Canada. The school is an accredited college with an art-specific focus. Photography is offered as one of the degree programs and students are required to learn advanced digital and film techniques. The instruction uses hands-on techniques in a studio setting and in outdoor settings. In addition to the photography techniques, the school teaches digital and film post-processing techniques.
The Rocky Mountain School of Photography is a nontraditional school with a certificate program. The school is a fast-track career program with 11-week intensive courses. The courses are based in Missoula, Montana and teach studio and outdoor techniques. A large portion of the curriculum is based in modern digital techniques and post processing software but elements of film are covered.
