What Are Good Schools for Sports Management?

A degree in sports management can lead to a career in fields such as journalism, coaching and administration. However, the competition for jobs in the sporting industry can be very tough. There are no official rankings for sport management programs, however there are a number of institutions across the United States that offer sports management degrees.
  1. Columbia University

    • Columbia University offers a master's degree in sports management. The Ivy League program is designed to increase a student's employment opportunities by teaching her about finance, sports personnel management, law, marketing and facility/event organization. The aim of the course is to train students for jobs in all sectors of the sporting industry.

    Drexel University

    • Drexel University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management. The program mainly focuses on sports business, sports marketing, sports media and sports law. Students are required to put together a professional portfolio that includes items such as a press kit and sports contract. Students have the option of doing a four-year program with one six-month internship or a five-year program that features three six-month periods of employment.

    Indiana University

    • Indiana University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with a major in sports marketing and management. To be considered for the program, students are expected to have completed prerequisite courses in business, math and economics and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. No more than 60 students are admitted to the program each year. The Bloomington-based instituion also offers a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in sports management.

    Northwestern University

    • Rated 12th in the U.S. News and World Report 2011 National University rankings, Northwestern University offers a Master of Arts in sports administration with the option to specialize in sports management. The course teaches students the theoretical side of sports business and management and provides them with hands-on experience in the Chicago-area sports community. The program is widely acknowledged as one of best in its field.

    University of Oregon

    • Located in Eugene, the University of Oregon is home to the James H. Warsaw Marketing Center, where the university's sports management students learn how to apply marketing and finance principles in a sports context. Graduates from the program have gone on to work for Adidas and Nike, as well as the NBA.
