Kaplan International College offers English language classes in two locations in Chicago. The students learn reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Courses include sessions of one to four or five to 12 weeks of English with 20 classes per week for foreign tourists, usually offered in summer, as well as varied time frame courses of general English with 20 classes plus seven structured study sessions per week, and Intensive English with 28 classes and seven structured study sessions per week. Each lesson is 45 minutes. Kaplan also offer academic English classes for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and intensive English; both sessions take 16 weeks or longer to complete. The City Colleges of Chicago Adult Education Department offers English classes for Illinois residents at no cost in six locations. Adult Basic Education (ABE) literacy classes help students improve their reading, writing and math abilities. City Colleges' English as a Second Language course is offered at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels and teaches students speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary development, grammar and civics. City Colleges also offer citizenship courses to help students prepare for their citizenship test.
University of Chicago International House offers English as a Second Language at three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced. Classes are one semester in length. The intermediate course helps students use functional English and improve their listening skills with a concentration on grammar and pronunciation. The advanced English class prepares students to participate in debates and other interactive skills, plus grammar, pronunciation and writing skills. The cost is $250, plus $50 for materials. Additional electives, including effective academic and professional writing and communication strategies, are also available.
Language Trainers offer English classes online or at your home or office. Class times are flexible to fit in with your schedule and may be taken one-on-one or in a group setting. The average course length is 30 hours, but this is flexible for the needs of each student or group. Classes include English for business use and general English. New students take the English Language Level Test, which allows the teacher to customize the course to fit their needs. Pricing ranges from $49 to $115 per course.
