Instructions

    • 1

Consider what it is you wish to learn about opinions on gambling. Do you just want opinions on blackjack? Is the respondents' age important? Take notes to work out exactly what it is you are looking for. Decide on the target audience for your survey, as this will allow you to pinpoint your survey questions and ensure that any survey responses are reliable and useful.

    • 2

Draft 4 to 6 questions that are relevant to the audience, to the gambling issue you are focusing on, and will provide the answers you are looking for. Types of questions could include simple yes or no questions, multiple choice, or asking how much or how little the respondent agrees with a statement using a scale from 1 to 5, for example. Keep questions short, and use simple and appropriate language that your respondents will understand.

    • 3

Check over your drafted questions, ensuring there are no open-ended questions and removing ambiguous phrases such as "locally" and "recently" as these change in meaning from person to person. Check that the questions refer precisely to the area you are interested in, such as sports betting, and not to "gambling" in general. Ensure that the questions are in a logical order.

    • 4

Ask a friend or relative who matches your research target audience to answer your draft questions. Use this opportunity to change the wording of questions and ensure that the survey actually provides you with the information you need.

Send the URL of your survey or a paper copy to your list of contacts. Remember to tell your contacts of any time limits for their responses.

Log into your Google Account at the end of the survey period, and open your survey form to view your respondents' answers. Retrieve your survey responses by hand or using your local postal system if your survey was distributed on paper, and tally the responses manually.
