How to Write Critical Essays Based on Movies

Movies are more than entertainment. They help us to think and reflect and they give us shared experience to discuss with others. They inspire great writing, too. A critical essay examining a movie requires the writer to go deeper -- to delve into the intricacies of the story and subtle actions of the camera, crew and actors. It is a study of the seemingly insignificant and invisible rather than the obvious plot line. While the role of a review is to judge a film based on a writer's reaction, a critical essay asks the writer to examine the elements of the film that created the reaction.

Choose a movie and watch it critically. Take notes on everything from the story to camera lighting and angle. Research the actors, directors and history of the story line. After the film is over, examine your list and categorize your notes. These categories will comprise your body paragraphs. If you are to highlight particular elements of the film, take extra care to organize these in your notes.

    • 2

Compose a thesis statement. This needs to be both strong and creative. It will unify your essay. The thesis is not a statement on the quality of the film but on the elements you examined that made the film. Next craft an introductory paragraph defining the movie, year it was produced, director, title, primary actors and production company. This should be brief and concise, serving to introduce and support your thesis.

    • 3

Write the main body. If you are to focus on specific elements, define these in depth at the beginning of your paper. Discuss all aspects of the film and reference scenes and dialogue as needed. Avoid using "I" as it acknowledges you as a reviewer rather than a writer critically examining a piece of entertainment. Your paper should be objective rather than subjective.

    • 4

Conclude and edit. Your conclusion should tie into your thesis and wrap your argument up in a successful manner. Edit and polish your paper. Do your best to make sure your paper is under the allotted page number or word limit. If not, cut unnecessary words or information, focusing on the main elements.
