Apply to a community college in your area that offers RHIT programs. To become an RHIT, you will need only an associate's degree. Many local colleges offer programs in the field; however, traditional colleges are not the only option available. There are online programs that provide the same courses and skills learned in the traditional classroom, as well as offer an RHIT associate's degree.
Complete the 2-year program involved with obtaining an associate's degree. Typical RHIT programs will consist of courses, such as anatomy and physiology, medical coding, health information management systems, health information technology and health statistics and data analysis. The course load for the 2-year program is fairly heavy, but students will graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the field.
Register to take the RHIT certification examination. This examination is available to those individuals who have already achieved an RHIT associate's degree, as well as those individuals in the last term of an RHIT program. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) administers the examination and grants the certificate. Once you pass the examination, you may use the RHIT certification for employment purposes.
