How Do We Cite Pictures?

Citing pictures in academic essays at college or university is vital. These citations allow you to attribute any information you received from the images, avoid accusations of plagiarism and also provides readers of the essay with easy access to information about the picture and the artist. The Modern Language Association, or MLA, has a system of citations which is widely used for citing a range of sources including text, pictures and video. The MLA method is widely used, but it is advised to check with your learning institution that they accept this method of citation.

Instructions

    • 1

Paste the picture you wish to cite into your essay just after the text to which the picture relates. Select the picture and drag it so that is at either the extreme left or right of the page.

    • 2

Move your writing cursor to below the picture and then click the "Insert" tab on the top tool bar. Select "Caption" in the drop-down menu and type your caption in the box followed by a small indented number corresponding to the number of this citation on the page. For example, if it is the second thing you have cited on the page, put a "2" in the caption; if it is the third, put a "3." Click the "OK" button.

    • 3

Right click on the image and select "Format" from the menu. Select the "Layout" tab and change the "Wrapping Style" to "Square." This means that when you continue writing, the text will wrap itself around the picture and look neat.

    • 4

Repeat the caption number in the footnote at the bottom of the page. Write the artist's name beside the number, forename first. Then put a comma, followed by the name of the picture underlined, and then the year of its production.

    • 5

Write the name of the individual or institution who owns the image, for example "Museum of Modern Art, New York" after the production year in the footnote. If you got the image from a book then follow this with the title of the book, underlined, followed by the word "by" and its author. Then, in brackets, write the city it was published in, a colon, the name of the publisher, a comma and then the year of publication. Outside the brackets write the page number for the image in the book. If you got the image from the Internet, simply follow the name of the institution with your date of accessing the website and the URL.

    • 6

Arrange the picture section of your bibliography page in alphabetical order by the artist's surname. Follow the surname with a comma, the artist's forename and then a period. Write the name of the picture, underlined and followed by another period. Then write the year of production, followed by a period.
