Characteristics of an Ideal Professor

Professors are experts in their fields of study. In colleges and universities throughout the world, professors demonstrate commitment and hard work. They are expected to be educated and to maintain a high level of respect for the college and its students. There are several characteristics that an ideal professor should have.
  1. Commitment to the College

    • An ideal professor should have a strong commitment to the college for which she works. She should be proud to display the school crest, wear the school colors and participate in school activities. If a professor is ashamed of the college she works at, it will reflect in her work. She will dread going to class, avoid students and may even withdraw from fellow faculty members altogether. Showing a strong commitment to the college will build positive energy for the school and its students. She will represent the college in a postive light wherever she goes.

    Strong Educational Background

    • Every professor must have a strong educational background. Most colleges won't even accept applications from candidates unless they have a doctorate degree. This means each professor should have graduated from high school, earned a bachelor's, a master's and finally a doctorate. If the professor is teaching education, then she will also need to have earned an Ed.S,. or Education Specialist, degree. It's also favorable if professors were involved in clubs or extracurricular activities. This demonstrates their experience and interest in belonging to an organization. Professors are often required to perform research and write articles for academic journals. They work to develop new ideas and theories within their field. When they aren't teaching, an ideal professor should be performing research, making discoveries and writing.

    Love of Teaching

    • It should be no secret that the ideal professor should have a love of teaching. A large portion of time involves the professor teaching students. It's obvious if the professor is simply there to go through the motions. This type of professor will make no connections with the students, not to mention many may not even feel the need to show up to class. An ideal professor will be enthusiastic about the lessons. She will find ways to create hands-on opportunities for students. Participation is key and a good professor won't mind taking the extra time to design interesting lessons and activities for students.

    Interest in Continuing Education

    • As the world continues to change and grow, it's important that our educators continue learning about new and updated information. A willingness to continue their education is a characteristic an ideal professor will have. Whether it be through other degrees, professional development courses, lectures, seminars or special training, continuing education is a necessity.
