Determine the requirements of your externship. If you are required to complete an externship for your school, make sure you know the length and any other requirements. If you are completing an externship on your own, decide how long you would like to shadow a pharmacist.
Talk to professors at your college or any contact you have in the pharmacy field to find a pharmacy externship. Most externships are set up by networking.
Find a pharmacy to complete your externship, if you do not have contacts. Retail pharmacies, such as Walgreens, CVS, and Rite-Aid, are usually very accommodating to students. Call a local pharmacy and speak to the pharmacy manager about shadowing in the pharmacy. You can also try pharmacies at hospitals or medical centers.
Prepare for your externship. Make a list of questions that you want to ask the professionals at the pharmacy. You may forget your questions when you are working, so be sure to write out a list.
Show up on time at the pharmacy. Dress professionally and bring a notebook. Take notes during the day. During slow times, ask the pharmacy staff your questions. An externship is short term and designed to help you decide on your career path, so try to make use of your time at the pharmacy.
