How to Be Cool With Residents as a Resident Assistant

It's always nice to be liked. When you're a resident assistant at a university, doing things to get your residents to not only like you but to respect you is a recipe for a dynamic time for all. Developing a solid relationship with your residents can make the difference between an excellent college experience and a poor one. It's up to you to not only enforce the rules but to create a bit of entertainment for your residents as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Get to know your residents. Learn everyone's name and a funny little tidbit about them. The best time to reach them is when you first meet them; set the tone by making it clear that you're someone who won't play favorites. Address them by their name when you see them so you begin to develop a bond.

    • 2

Have an open-door policy. Let your residents know that they can come to you when they are in need, even if that means going across town to pick them up from work when their ride has bailed. Create a sense of family within your floor so everyone looks out for each other.

    • 3

Hold a weekly chat session where all of the residents can come together for free pizza and drinks and just hang out. Ask a local pizzeria to host your meetings by providing free pizza in exchange for getting their menus out to all of your building.

    • 4

Schedule an activity regularly. Choose activities such as bowling, softball, board games and even speed dating where you can go as a group to participate. Challenge other RAs and residents to a game of softball or kickball on the front lawn or your intramural field. Plan a fitness challenge to encourage a group of residents to go run the track with you in the evenings. Keep activities posted on the calendar and create them often so you give residents something to do and look forward to.

    • 5

Bring in special guests to speak with your residents once a month. Ask the police chief to talk about vandalism and sexual assault or your local fireman to chat about fire safety. Fill the fun and adventure with serious topics that will help your residents even after they leave you.

    • 6

Volunteer on a community project together. Get your residents, and the rest of your building, together to work on a charity function where you can serve as volunteers and lend a helping hand. This may be assisting with a housing building project for a needy family or reading to the elderly in a nursing home. Take time once a semester to do a good deed.
