Find out as much information as you can about the intellectual disabilities of the people you are teaching and what their specific needs are. Talk to their family members or caregivers.
Divide the individuals into small groups of two to three people who have similar abilities and needs. For example, pair together those students who need to learn how to feed themselves.
Present the information you wish to teach the individuals by not only using verbal directions, but also demonstrating the information or using pictures. For example, if you are teaching them how to brush their teeth, do not just explain the process, but also use a picture chart with step-by-step instructions for teeth brushing as well as demonstrate teeth brushing yourself.
Give each individual a chance to demonstrate the information that you are trying to teach them. This will give them the opportunity to try the new skills as well as help you determine whether they understand the information.
Provide praise and feedback for each student. This will help them gain confidence and let them know exactly what they are doing correctly or if any areas need improvement.
