How to Cite a Paragraph Number Internally

In-text citations are essential to building strong arguments and avoiding plagiarism in academic writing. Citations give your readers a direct link to the sources you used to write your paper. While page numbers are used to reference books and journals in the commonly used Modern Language Association and American Psychological Association in-text citation styles, paragraph numbers are sometimes used to cite electronic resources where page numbers do not exist. The style for in-text citation of paragraphs is the same in both APA and MLA.

      Place your cursor at the end of the sentence or paragraph you want to reference.

      Type an open parenthesis by pressing and holding down the "Shift" key and pressing "9."

      Type the surname of the author of the electronic resource you are referencing followed by a comma and a space.

      Type "para." followed by a space and the number of the paragraph you are referencing.

      For example: (Orwell, para. 9

      To cite multiple paragraphs, type "pars." followed by a space and the numbers of the paragraphs you are referencing, separated by a hyphen.

      For example: (Orwell, pars. 9-10

      Type a close parenthesis by pressing and holding the "Shift" key, then pressing "0." End the sentence or paragraph containing the in-text citation with a period.

      Your reference should look like this: (Orwell, par. 9).
