How to Focus on Studying in College

College life can provide students with many distractions from their studies, ranging from their social lives to the responsibilities of living on their own. Such problems can lead to poor academic performance and other detrimental consequences. Students can find ways, however, to better focus on their studies and manage their time effectively. These include both the way that they go about studying and the setting in which they study.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a study schedule and possibly a daily studying routine. Set time goals by determining particular amounts of material you want to cover by certain deadlines. Determine times of day when you are most focused and use those for studying, or for studying more difficult subjects.

    • 2

Create a proper setting for studying. Pick a quiet place where there are no distractions -- for example, a library or a classroom. Make sure your study area is well-lit, tidy and comfortable.

    • 3

Create a reward system. Alternate your studying time with predetermined activities that you enjoy or with periods of rest. This can motivate you to complete the studying to obtain the reward.

    • 4

Make sure to get enough sleep and keep your sleeping habits regular. Eat nutritious food and ensure that you get enough exercise. This helps you stay alert and focused.

    • 5

Study with friends. The people studying in the group can keep each other focused and motivated while also providing a fresh perspective on the material.
