How to Have a Happy College Experience

Leaving home, family and friends for the first time can be both exhilarating and frightening for many college students. Even though 79% of American college freshman were accepted by their number one college choice, according to UCLA's Higher Education Research Institute, many students wonder if they will be happy at college. Students who are willing to use college as a time where they can grow intellectually and emotionally will find that they will have a happy college experience.

      Allow your professors to see that you are more than just a name on a roster and try to develop a relationship with them. Stop by their offices to ask homework questions and clarify points of the lecture that were not clear to you. Inquire about their research and other academic achievements and let them know that you appreciate what you are learning from them.

      Get involved on campus. Go to your school's club sign-up week, learn about the clubs and organizations on campus and choose two or three to join. Participate in community service activities and consider taking spring break trips and tours. If you are interested in religion, find the school's religious organizations and find out how you can become a member.

      Explore who you are and take positive risks. Take a physical education class that teaches you a sport you never thought you would play. Join a political protest march. Say hello to that cute guy you see in your microeconomics class. Taking positive risks helps you grow and become more confident in yourself.

      Concentrate on your schoolwork to prevent the stress and unhappiness that come from managing bad grades. Look at your syllabi and plan a weekly study schedule. Form study groups with other people who are serious about their schoolwork and help each other.

      Make new friends. Remind yourself that your life is enriched by the people in it. Ask two of your general psychology classmates out for coffee. Arrange a game night where you can invite those you have met in your clubs. Find ways to create bonds with the people that cross your path.

      Choose to study something that interests you. Consider the academic path that you are on and decide if a career in that field is right for you. Make an appointment at the career center and ask for tests that will help you choose a major that is fitted for your strengths. Keep in mind that if you do not like what you are doing you will not be happy.
