How to Look Up Books for a College Course

College is overwhelming at times. Especially if you are a freshman or are enrolled at a new school for the first semester, finding out how to do things like register for classes or buy the right textbooks is often hard. However, in the age of the Internet, almost all colleges and universities have made it so you can determine what books you will need online without having to run around campus or even leave your room.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign onto the Internet on your computer. Go to your college website's main page. Click on the link for the school bookstore if it is available. If it is not, do a search within the college's website for "bookstore."

    • 2

Open the bookstore's main web page. Look for the link for "textbooks," "find course materials" or a similar headline or phrase. Click on this link.

    • 3

Consult the list of courses for which you are registered. Make sure you have the course numbers, instructors and semesters (Fall, Spring, etc.). Enter the course number into the appropriate box when the website prompts you to do so. Click enter or search so that the program can locate the course and its required texts. Cross check your registered course list information against what comes up on the screen to make sure that the instructor, number and semester all match.

Read the list of texts that comes up. Write down the names, authors and ISBN numbers of each of the books you will need. Note if they are designated as "required" or "recommended." Note if they are available and in stock at the bookstore or if you will need to buy or order them elsewhere.

Repeat Steps 1-4 for each of your classes each semester. Cross check the books listed on the bookstore's website with those listed on the actual course syllabus (when you get it) to make sure that they have not changed.
