How to Determine Margins for Documents

The world uses documents for many purposes including archiving information, corporate communication and keeping in touch with family friends and colleagues. While personal communications rarely have definite margin specifications, business correspondence does have specific formatting rules and accepted form. After determining the purpose of your document, further clarification is necessary to decide on the margins in your document.

Instructions

Decide on which writing style guide you will be following. There are many style guides available, the MLA guide, the APA guide and other specific guides for publications. Always check with the guidelines supplied with the document if it is requested for print.

Set the margins for all sides of the document to 1 inch in MLA and APA style documents. This border allows for the binding of the paper using staples or flexible spiral binders.

    • 3

Format your thesis or dissertation document according to your dissertation document style guide. Most academic documents, including refereed journal articles require a 1 1/2 inch right and left margin where no text appears. The top and bottom require a one inch margin. Any appendices or other ancillary materials must also conform to these margin restrictions.
