How to Keep From Being Homesick at College

For many college students, leaving the simple comforts of home to attend college can seem like an overwhelming experience. It's also the first time that some students have ever lived apart from their family and friends. As a result, they may feel homesick, which some people view as a normal adjustment to new surroundings and experiences. If you want to explore ways to cope with feeling homesick, there are several options to help lift your spirits.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to a trusted friend, family member or your resident or dorm advisor to form a support network. It's often beneficial to talk openly about your feelings instead of keeping them bottled up. There's a good chance that others may share similar feelings of being homesick.

    • 2

Join a club or student organization. Many college campuses offer programs on campus to keep students actively involved in their school and campus community. It's also an opportunity to meet new people, network and learn about other campus events.

    • 3

Get physical exercise. Go for a walk, play basketball or visit a local recreational center. The point is: get moving. Exercise generally helps to improve your well-being and reduces feelings of anxiety and depression.

    • 4

Bring mementos from home, such as a favorite mug, photograph or a lanyard bearing your hometown's name. Sometimes keeping familiar items in your new residence can provide a sense of comfort.

    • 5

Give yourself time to adjust to your new life. As you get more involved with campus activities, your academic coursework and community, you may start to feel more comfortable in your surroundings.
