How to Give a Good Speech by Knowing Your Topic

In order for a speech to be effective, the speaker must make the speech interesting and must include details, tips and advice. To do this, you must start with a topic that you know well. If the topic is something you do not know a lot about, spend a lot of time understanding and learning the subject before you begin writing your speech.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the topic of the speech. If you are able to choose the topic of the speech, choose something that interests you or something that you know and understand. If the topic is something you do not know a lot about, you can prepare for it by learning the subject.

    • 2

Research the topic. Even if you already understand the topic well, research is an important step. If you have a good understanding of the topic already, spend some time researching facts such as statistics or tips about the subject. If the topic is unfamiliar to you, begin researching it by using books, libraries and Internet sources. Find enough information on the subject and study the information. Before writing the speech, make sure you fully understand what you will be speaking about.

    • 3

Organize your information. When researching the topic, take good notes and organize the notes by subject. Keep a good record of your sources so you can quote sources throughout your speech.

    • 4

Learn your audience. Before writing the speech, determine who your audience will be and write the speech according to the audience.

    • 5

Narrow down the topic. Many speeches given are too broad. As you sort through your information, narrow it down to one or two main points. This will help your audience follow along with what you are saying.

    • 6

Write your speech in a logical way. As you begin writing your speech, place the information in a sequential order that will make sense to the audience.

    • 7

Use visual aids. Any type of visual aid helps the audience understand the points you are making in your speech more thoroughly.

    • 8

Be confident. As you give your speech, the audience will be able to perceive whether you know your topic well by the confidence you show while giving it. Your body gestures often give this away. Keep good eye contact and avoid reading your speech. Instead, refer to notes occasionally throughout the speech if necessary.
