How to Format Journal Summaries

Throughout your academic or professional career, you may occasionally be called upon to perform research and summarize some of this primary research, such as an article. If this is the case, you'll need to come up with a method of formatting your article summary. Be sure to check with your boss or professor to find out if there is a specific format you should use for the assignment.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a one or two-sentence summary in your introductory paragraph to discuss the focus of the research. Round out the paragraph by stating the research questions or hypotheses for the study.

    • 2

Identify the subjects involved in the experiment and discuss the procedures of the study in the paper's second paragraph. Answer questions like, "How was the study set up?" and "How were the subjects selected?"

    • 3

Summarize the methodology in the third paragraph. Reveal each of the variables and mention how each were measured in specific terms.

    • 4

Analyze the results of the study in the fourth paragraph. Did the data support the research questions posed earlier?

    • 5

Write a critique of the study for the remainder of the summary, which should be another two or three paragraphs. Discuss what could have been done differently in terms of methodology and how procedures could have been improved. Draw your own conclusions in terms of whether or not the study was ethical. Answer the question of how the study can be built on to further advancement in the field.
