Determine your eligibility for a Sons of Italy scholarship. You will be eligible for the general scholarship if you are a U.S. citizen of Italian descent with at least one Italian or Italian American grandparent. You must also be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited four-year academic institution for the Fall term of the current year and must not be a previous Sons of Italy scholarship winner.
Submit a cover sheet with your name, address, phone numbers (home, cell and school) and email address. You will also need to identify your Italian ancestry by last name, specifying whether the Italian name is from your mother's or father’s family. The cover letter should also state your academic level for fall of the current year, provide a list of the scholarships for which you are applying, and tell how you heard about the Sons of Italy scholarships. Send this cover letter along with a stamped, self-addressed business-size envelope.
Provide one official transcript from each of the academic institutions you've attended through December of the previous year. All transcripts need to be stamped by the institution and must be included in separate sealed envelopes. You can send them yourself or have them mailed directly from the institutions. If you are a high school student, your transcript(s) must include your class rank, class size and GPA. If you are a college undergraduate, you'll need to submit both high school and undergraduate transcripts. If you are a graduate student, you should submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
Get copies of the official results from all standardized tests you have taken during the past five years: ACT, SAT, GMAT, GRE, LSAT or MCAT. If any of these scores have been reported on your official transcripts, this should fulfill the requirement.
Prepare a current resume that outlines all of your extracurricular activities, employment experiences, volunteer work and honors. You will also need two letters of recommendation from your teachers, professors or educational administrators.
Type up an original essay of 500-750 words describing a personal experience. This experience should be one that demonstrated or instigated pride in your Italian heritage.
Send all of the above materials to the Sons of Italy Foundation along with the processing fee. All of these materials must be submitted in one package, with the exception of any transcripts mailed directly from the issuing institutions.
