Educational Grants for Older Returning Students

If you're an older adult returning to school, you have a lot of financial aid options--including grants, which don't have to be repaid. Contact the financial aid office of the school you plan to attend for information on grant programs offered by the school and your state. Although undergraduate students of any age can apply for federal Pell Grants, take heart in knowing that the 2007-2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study found older students were more likely than traditional students to receive Pell Grants. The same study found that older students were less likely to get aid from private foundations, but some grant makers specifically target older, nontraditional students.
  1. Bernard Osher Foundation

    • The Bernard Osher Foundation has a Reentry Scholarship program for students between the ages of 25 and 50 who have been out of school five years or more. The foundation doesn't award these grants directly to students. The money goes to educational institutions listed on the foundation's website. Qualified students receive the scholarships from the school.

Students apply directly to the foundation for a grant.
