How to Find My Government PLUS Loans That Are Outstanding

A PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) Loan allows a parent to borrow additional money for your child's college expenses. This loan can be obtained directly through the United States Department of Education---this type of loan is known as a Direct PLUS Loan. Or you may have opted to borrow through a participating lending institution (called an FFEL PLUS Loan).

If you're in need of your outstanding balance on your PLUS loan, deciphering where to start can be a bit daunting. Records of all PLUS loans are stored in one central database called the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), which is maintained by the Department of Education.

Gather all required information. Before you contact the Department of Education, make sure you have all personally identifiable information handy. To start, you'll need basic information such as your full name, Social Security number and date of birth. Additional information such as a PIN might also be necessary.

Loan information will be made available based on who's ultimately responsible for paying the loan. If you're the student seeking PLUS loan information, you may want to consult your parents for help in this process, since PLUS loans are borrowed by the parent.

Head onto the Internet. Check out the NSLDS central database (nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/). After navigating to that page, click the button or tab labeled "Financial Aid Review." You'll then encounter privacy and security pages, which offer general informational and a reassurance about what your experience will be on the site. If you understand and accept the details, click "Accept" to advance to the next section.

The next page will be the login page. There you'll input your personally identifiable information to bring up your PLUS Loan details.

Contact the NSDLS by telephone at (800) 4-FED-AID, or (800) 433-3243. Days and hours of operation change, but in general they're available Monday through Saturday, during the day and evening.

The telephone system is automated. It may give you the option to interact by voice or using your touch-tone phone. Listen closely for options relating to "Loan." If all else fails and you're uncertain on what options to choose next, you'll usually be presented with an option such as "Customer Service," sometimes accessible by pressing "0."
