How to Get Financial Aid If You Didn't Register for the Selective Service

A male student is required to register with the Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday; however, late registration is accepted until the time he turns 26 years of age. Once a male student celebrates his 26th birthday without registering for the Selective Service, he may no longer register and is no longer eligible to receive financial aid, grants or loans from the federal government. Although a male student can't obtain federal financial aid if he failed to register for the Selective Service, he may obtain financial assistance for college using alternative methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply for financial assistance in the form of a private student loan from a bank or other financial institution. Banks, particularly larger banks located across the nation, often offer private student loans for college students enrolled in classes at least part time at an accredited university.

    • 2

Go to the bank where you want to obtain a private student loan and fill out an application or file an application on the bank's website. You must provide your name, employment information, college name, address, Social Security number, date of birth, proof of identity such as your driver's license or state-issued identification card, and proof of your enrollment in classes. If you file an application online, you may fax copies of your proof of identification and class enrollment list to the bank.

    • 3

Ask a parent or your spouse to co-sign your private loan if you have insufficient or less-than-perfect credit. Private student loans require you have satisfactory credit history; younger students don't always have enough credit history to obtain a private loan.
