* "The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California: Being a Description of the Different Routes Across the Plains, with Directions for Crossing the Rocky Mountains" (1845). This book, written before the Donner Party expedition, was a popular guidebook for travelers heading west.
While Hastings's name is most often associated with the Donner Party, his legacy is more complex than simply that of a tragic figure. He also played a role in the development of California and is credited with contributing to the discovery of gold in the state.
His other written works include:
* "The Donner Party: A Tragedy of the Sierras" (1850) - This was Hastings's personal account of the Donner Party tragedy, which he wrote to defend himself against accusations of leading the party astray.
Note: There is a separate author named Warren Hastings, who was a British politician, but this is not the same person.
