Who rules Geatland at the beginning of poem?

At the beginning of the epic poem *Beowulf*, the king of Geatland is Hrothgar.

While Beowulf himself is a Geat warrior, he is not the king at the start of the story. He travels to Hrothgar's kingdom in Denmark to help defeat the monster Grendel.
