(HANSEL)
When at night I go to sleep,
Fourteen angels watch I keep,
Two my head are guarding,
Two my feet are warding,
And two on my right side,
Two upon my left side,
Two who warmly cover
And two who watch me over.
(GRETEL)
If that I in darkness lie,
God remains forever nigh;
He can see with sleepless eyes,
Though the night be dark as thrice,
So from danger I am free,
And no evil comes to me,
God his arm around me throws,
And he gives me sweet repose.
(HANSEL)
Two are who my steps attend,
Two my soul from harm defend,
Two before my path to clear,
Two behind my back appear,
And if I, God's child, should die,
Two shall carry me on high.
(GRETEL)
So to God himself I pray,
That his angels with me stay,
That they bring me calm delight,
Keeping harm and terror from sight;
When he sends his angels near,
Then no evil need I fear,
Safe from every hurt and pain,
Safe until life's day shall wane.
