What are the oldest known writings of vampires?

The oldest surviving works to mention the idea of vampires are poems by the first-century Roman poet Ovid. In his Metamorphoses he told of the mythical king Tereus who was transformed into a bird; and of Empusa, one of the three Gorgons, who sucked blood from a victim before devouring his flesh.
