Setting of the big wave story?

Peahi, Maui

Peahi, also known as Jaws, is a small bay located on the north shore of Maui, Hawaii. While the beach itself may be small, Peahi is known for the large waves that can form there, thanks in part to the unique underwater geography of the area and the predominant winter swells that come from the north Pacific. During the winter months, waves at Peahi can reach up to 40-60 feet, making it one of the biggest and most challenging surf spots in the world.
