Why are all of the characters in S.E. Hintons books males?

S.E. Hinton's books do not exclusively feature male characters. In fact, some of her most well-known works, such as "The Outsiders" and "That Was Then, This Is Now," feature both male and female characters and explore themes related to gender roles and identity.
