Early life and career
Lopez was born in San Jose, California, and is of Mexican descent. His parents were farmers who immigrated from Mexico to the United States in the 1930s. Lopez grew up in a poor family and attended public schools in San Jose. He was the first member of his family to attend college, and graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in political science.
After college, Lopez worked as a community organizer and advocate for the rights of farmworkers. He also worked as a real estate agent and developer. Lopez is the founder of the East Side Union High School District and served on the board of the Association of California School Administrators.
Political career
Lopez was elected to the San Jose City Council in 1987 and served until 1995. During his time on the city council, he focused on improving public safety, revitalizing the city's economy, and expanding educational opportunities.
In 1995, Lopez was elected Mayor of San Jose, defeating incumbent Susan Hammer. He served as mayor until 2006, and was reelected twice. During his time as mayor, Lopez oversaw the construction of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, the expansion of the city's light rail system, and the creation of several new parks and recreation areas. He also led the city through the process of addressing its severe homelessness and housing affordability issues.
Legacy
Lopez is considered to be one of the most successful and popular mayors in San Jose history. He is credited with improving the city's quality of life and making it a more economically prosperous and vibrant place to live and work.
After leaving office, Lopez continued to be involved in public service. He served on several boards and commissions, including the California High-Speed Rail Authority, the Mineta Transportation Institute, and the San Jose State University Board of Trustees.
In 2016, Lopez was inducted into the San Jose Hall of Fame. He is the only Latino to have received this honor.

Lopez is married to Linda Lopez, and they have two children, Salvador Jr. and Monica.
