The NBDE is a three-part examination that evaluates the scientific knowledge and clinical skills of candidates for dental licensure in the United States. The NBDE is developed and administered by the National Board of Dental Examiners (NBDE).
Part I: Basic Sciences, is a written examination that covers the basic sciences relevant to dentistry, including anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology.
Part II: Dental Sciences, is a written examination that covers the dental sciences, including dental anatomy, operative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery.
Part III: Clinical Dentistry, is a clinical examination that evaluates candidates' ability to perform a variety of dental procedures, including patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment execution.
State Licensure Examinations
In addition to the NBDE, most states require candidates for dental licensure to pass a state licensure examination. State licensure examinations typically cover the same topics as the NBDE, but they may also include questions on state-specific laws and regulations.
